Overview

This course provides a comprehensive overview of non-fatal strangulation, focusing on its identification, associated medical risks, and the importance of accurate assessment in clinical and forensic settings. Participants will learn to differentiate between strangulation and choking, recognize key signs and symptoms, and understand the legal implications surrounding strangulation cases. The course also covers the emergency medical risks through anatomical and structural insights, as well as statistics highlighting the link between non-fatal strangulation and future lethality. Case photos and forensic interviewing techniques will be used to deepen understanding of real-world dynamics and the critical need for thorough evaluation and documentation.

  3. Verbalize Understanding of the dynamics of strangulation and the need for accurate assessment and imaging when caring for a strangled patient.

Shannon Parker RN-SANE, FNE

Forensic RN Violence Prevention Coordinator

Shannon has been a nurse at St. Elizabeth Healthcare for 5 years and been with the Forensic program for 3 of those years. Initially she began her career in the Emergency Department before deciding to focus primarily on patient’s with Forensic needs. She is very passionate about victims of violence and is dedicated to delivering quality, trauma-informed care to survivors. Shannon is a Daubert hearing verified expert witness that deems her testifiable in Boone County as an expert witness in strangulation cases This is in addition to her testifying as an expert in a child abuse case. In July of 2020, Shannon developed a taskforce called the Northern Kentucky Violence Prevention Taskforce. The taskforce is a multidisciplinary team that includes nurses, law enforcement officers, prosecutors, advocates, social workers, paramedics, firefighters, and other community partners. The taskforce worked collaboratively to create a regional Non-Fatal Strangulation Protocol and provide education to first responders in the region. She has a large, blended family and enjoys spending time with her husband (Scotty) and children (Hope, Collin, Adriana & Esmond). She also enjoys listening to worship music, crime podcasts, and reading.
